Rohypnol

Unfortunately, GHB is very easy to make. Most GHB is made by people in their homes. It can be made in a person’s kitchen. It’s also very easy to make wrong, which takes this drug from dangerous to deadly. Some people make it with dangerous chemicals such as drain cleaner or paint remover. These can cause chemical burns on the throat when the drug is swallowed.

Heather’s Story: Rohypnol

Heather MacPhee didn’t keep track of her drink when she went out one night, and a little white pill was slipped into it without her knowledge. She started to feel funny, like she was really drunk. She couldn’t walk or talk properly. Luckily, her friends noticed she was acting strangely. She woke up in the hospital the next morning unable to remember anything that had happened the night before.2

The drug Heather was slipped was called Rohypnol. Like with Samantha Reid, someone had probably hoped to make Heather more “lively.” Instead, she almost lost her life. Rohypnol is another drug that is very difficult to detect. It has no smell, color, or taste, so it’s impossible to know if someone might have put it into your drink.

Rohypnol is a brand name of the drug flunitrazepam. It was originally developed in 1975 as a sedative, which is a medication to help people sleep. It relaxes the muscles and makes you calm and tired. It is used legally in many countries to help people with sleeping and anxiety disorders, but it’s illegal in the United States. Most Rohypnol in the United States has been smuggled in from Europe or Mexico.3

Since Rohypnol is a drug brand made by a specific company, it is mostly made in labs. After it started to be misused, the company that manufactures it made it slower to dissolve. They also added a blue color to it. But fake Rohypnol is also made illegally by amateur chemists. This can be even more dangerous than the real stuff.
